New Jobs Created by the Pet Economy Boom

The pet economy is booming in China. In fact, it's now worth 493.6 billion yuan, according to the latest figures from iiMedia Research (AiMedia Consulting). And it's set to keep growing. By 2025, it's expected to reach 811.4 billion yuan.

This has not only led to the pet supplies market doing well, but it has also led to a whole series of new jobs for people who work with pets. These new jobs meet the growing needs of pet owners and also inject new vitality into the job market.

I. Licensed vets: Pet Health Guardians

pet health is one of the most important concerns for pet owners. And practising veterinarians are like the guardians of pet health, playing a big role in the pet economy. As of 2022, there will be 136,000 official veterinarians, 165,000 practising veterinarians and 177,000 rural veterinarians in China. Based on the ratio of demand for veterinary services per 1,000 people in developed countries, there will be a shortage of about 300,000 practising veterinarians in China. While there are already plenty of vets in China, there's still a gap compared to other countries. As the number of pets keeps on rising and pet owners get better at looking after their animals, there'll be a growing need for licensed vets.

Second, there's the pet beautician: the pet fashion leader.

They use their professional skills to give pets a bath, trim their hair, and style their coats, making them look more fashionable and lovely. The pet grooming industry is helping to grow the market for pet care products and services, and it's also giving pet owners more choice. The latest figures show that the market size of China's pet beauty care industry has grown from 2.12 billion yuan in 2015 to 9.64 billion yuan in 2021. That's an increase of 17.99% year on year and a compound annual growth rate of 24.15%.

Thirdly, pet trainers: those who shape pet behaviour.

The "China Pet Training System Market Situation Analysis and Development Prospect Assessment Report 2023-2029", published by MarketResearchOnline.com, shows that China's pet training system industry has been growing. It went from 13.51 billion yuan in 2016 to 20.28 billion yuan in 2020. Pet trainers are people who train pets to behave better. They help pets break bad habits and learn new things using scientific methods, so that pets can fit better into family life. As the number of pets keeps on rising and pet owners are paying more attention to behavioural issues, there's a growing demand for pet trainers. As the pet industry continues to grow, the profession of pet trainer will become more valuable.

Pet Mortician: The Guardian of Pet Life

The latest figures show that in 2018, the value of China's pet funeral industry was around 1.175 billion yuan. By 2020, this had grown to 1.509 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of around 13.7%. As of 2021, the industry continued to expand, reaching 1.759 billion yuan and posting a year-on-year growth rate of 16.6%. Pet owners give their pets a dignified and heartwarming send-off, which helps them cope with the loss of their pets. As the pet economy continues to grow, the pet funeral industry is really starting to take off, with the market expanding. As the number of pets keeps on rising and pet owners become more emotionally attached to their pets, there'll be a growing need for pet morticians.

The growth of the pet economy has not only led to a thriving pet supplies market, but also created a whole range of new pet-related jobs. These new roles are not only meeting the growing needs of pet owners, but also injecting new energy into the job market. As the pet economy continues to grow, we can expect to see more new jobs emerge to provide pet owners with more comprehensive and professional services. At the same time, we also hope that the relevant departments will make sure that new occupations are properly regulated and guided so that the pet economy can continue to grow in a healthy and orderly way.
